"She just went out to corporations, businesses and contacts from K-Mart to a small store and told her story." City of Hope honored Mrs. Katz in 1994 for her "extraordinary effort" in raising more than $1 million for the charity. Mrs. Katz was named the B'nai B'rith Women woman of the year in fund-raising in 1959 and woman of the year of the Emory chapter in 1973. She was president of the Fidelity B'nai B'rith chapter in 1963-64 and the Atlanta chapter in 1964- 65.

Mrs. Katz's success in raising money amazed her husband of 75 years, Jay Katz of Atlanta. "She hit all these million-dollar clubs," he said. "She married at 15. She didn't have the schooling necessary to get along in this world.

Hazel Katz cuts the cake at the B'nai B'rith 120th anniversary party in 1963. She was named woman of the year twice.

Her knack for fundraising has netted Jewish groups more than $1 million. "Oh, God knows. Whatever she asked me for, I had to give her. You couldn't say no." In 1975, the Katzes were presented the idealism award for the City of Hope Pilot Medical Center. The Katzes married in secret when he was 19 and she was 15.

"If we had any better sense, we wouldn't have," said her husband. "We were just two kids." The marriage was successful, believes Mili Katz, because of their "acceptance of each other as who they Mrs. Katz was 46 years old when she learned to drive and immediately used it in her volunteer work, Mark Katz said. In her 80s, Mrs. Katz organized a volunteer group for the William Bremen Jewish Home.

Her work as charity volunteer, treasurer and fund-raiser was "the only hobby she ever had," said her son Richard Katz of Atlanta. "It was her hobby and her life." Katz, 90, dynamic fund-raiser, volunteer By Kay Powell STAFF WRITER Hazel Katz raised her family and then raised millions of dollars for Jewish causes through B'nai B'rith and City of Hope. It was through B'nai B'rith Women which she joined 1 to make friends after moving to Atlanta 48 years ago that Mrs. Katz discovered her fund-raising talent.

She continued through October when she resigned after 25 years as treasurer of City of Hope. Mrs. Katz, 90, died Monday of cancer at her Atlanta residence. The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Greenwood Cemetery.

Green Lawn Jewish Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements. Her fund-raising experience began when B'nai B'rith Women compiled a calendar and address book to raise money, and Mrs. Katz solicited sponsors and advertisem*nts, said her daughter-in-law, Mili Katz of Norcross. "They just couldn't say no to her," said Mili Katz, "She was a real dynamo. She watched what was going on in the community as she drove around.
